My little 18 month old chihuahua has been diagnosed with this awful disease along side syringomyelia. Has anyone here got any experience in this awful disease. Could anyone try to help me find as much as we can about it. Apparantely it is very common even though no one seems to have heard of it. I would appreciate anything anyone can tell me.

What is GME? Like the actual name of the disease?

Granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis It's just awful and I'm so sad you are going through this. The symptoms are very similar to some of the SM symptoms it's a condition of the brain and spinal cord.. Plus with the hydro this is just awful. From what I've read her prognosis is not very good  this just breaks my heart. I think you should contact a couple of neurologists for their opinions plus try the BVA they maybe able to help but I think and this sounds so do awful you need to look at what's best for your baby. I am so so sad for you. I honestly hope you can come to some sort of plan for your baby. Please keep us up to date you must be heart broken. |

Thank you so much for your support. I am just heartbroken. Everything i try to find out about GME is so negative. Ive found who i think is one of this countrys top animal neurologists. Hes based at the davies specialist veterinary centre in bedfordshire. His name is Laurent Garosi. Ive asked my vet to refer my little mia to him. I cannot believe 2 weeks ago she was running around like a whippet and now she is sleeping nearly all day and feeling very down. Shes on high doses of steroids and tramadol pain relief. I did find a clinic in boston usa who claims to have a good success rate treating GME on a cocktail of a 3 drug treatment. From what ive read on clinic in bedfordshire they use a similar treatment protocol. She can have her syringomyelia treated to, as my vet is just ignoring that condition and she has a severe case of it. I will keep you all informed of how my little mia progresses or not. I just appreciate the support as this is a very scarey, lonely time at the moment. So thank you.

I have nothing to add but just wanted to say that I admire your persistence on getting the best treatment for Mia. I do think a specialist is the way to go. I am thinking of you and wishing you and mia the best possible outcome!

I'm so sorry your little Mia is going through this. I know it must be very difficult for you. I too admire you for getting such good care for your little one. I'll be keeping your little Mia in my thoughts and hoping things go well for her at the Bedfordshire clinic. xx |

It maybe because symptoms of SM can be similar to GME. I think 2 of the diagnosed with sm chis have symptoms, the others you wouldn't know at all other than the MRI says so. I would deffo see a specialist.. No offence to your own vet but he won't really know what to do as didn't train in it!
It is very negative and very low chance of survival from what ive read but again I don't know anything. What I would say (and I say this out of kindness coz I had to do the same recently) is set yourself a limit for letting her go. It sounds awful but it gets very very hard not to keep pushing on because they show a glimmer of hope. I had said as soon as mine started to suffer I would say goodbye... It got to that point and I couldn't I was getting all hysterical and couldn't see straight but luckily had a very very good friend who was equally as hysterical but could see sense. Do you have someone to come with you to these appointments? You shouldn't go alone because you need the support and someone to listen to the vet. I spent the entire time howling in the consultation room whilst my friend listened
