I think this is common amongst chi owners...Its horrible to watch and frightening at first. Everyone i know with a chihuahua has experienced it at least a few times in their life, if not more often (some every day!) Lula does it and its normally when she gets super excited. i stop it by giving her some water to lick on my finger, which usually works.

Some people will say to rub their throat, or gently blow in their face, or cup your hand and put it over their muzzle... but pinching their nose closed works the fastest and easiest in my opinion. See, I've found it totally depends on the dog with what works for them. Matilda got into a fit in the middle of the night last night (she'd gotten into some candy while we were gone so threw up a bit--which is what causes her reverse sneezing)...I was asleep & trying to hold her nostrils closed since that's what works for Mari & well...I wasn't away enough to realize who I was helping. LOL Anyway...it didn't work at all & actually made it worse. So I really think it depends. Also wanted to add that dogs have different "triggers" to reverse sneezing (which I think I read is caused by spasming of the soft palate). Some dogs will get triggered by excitement--for example Mari will if we've been gone for a while & come home. She gets excited & that's what triggers hers. If Matilda gets indigestion she'll burp up & then get thrown into a fit. Maya eats too quickly & that sets her off. Marley...if you touch his neck just right it will set him off. I was worried his was more a collapse trachea thing but it's definitely a reverse sneezing & not a honking like the collapsed trachea. Sometimes I think it can be caused by allergies as well but most of the time I think it's excitement, activity, eating, etc. But it's definitely normal for many small breed dogs. But it can for sure be frightening when you don't know whats going on. With Mari...she is classic in sticking her "elbows" out & really elongating her body & head. That did sort of alarm me at first because she looked like she was struggling. But a little nostril squeeze for a minute (she does take a while to calm) & she is ok.

Clever Daisy, mine panic! They give it a few tries and then when they look back and see its still there they look totally horrified and seem to freak out a bit and start running around and scooting try to shake it lol. It must feel weird.

Brody sometimes has the hair problem too. Mainly because he licks up every stray cat hair he can find off the carpet, even though I vacuum a LOT! Triskit just sheds wayyyyyyyyyy too much. I saw him slurp up a bit of cat hair just the other day when Triskit jumped off the couch. WHY in the WORLD would he want to eat cat hair. Weirdo!!

I have had to help with poops before too. They'll kinda be running around in circles crying, so I'll go to them and there is poop dangling out of their butt by my hair.. My poor babies, It hasn't happened for awhile though.
