We frequently hear the term Teacup Chihuahua in the media on the Internet, in the street, if you haven't hear it count yourself lucky!!!
The term Teacup along with tiny, toy, miniature, rare is purely fabricated by unscrupulous breeders who are using this marketing ploy to con more money out of people. The chihuahua breed standards state the chihuahuas are between 2-6lb to conform with the standard) they do come bigger and some are smaller however it doesn't make them any more special or rare than any others!! It's all down to genetics!!
When looking for a puppy please do not be fooled by these terms and bear in mind if you are after a dog who will be between 2-3lb as an adult you will need to do a lot of research into possible health complaints (hypoglycaemia, liver shunts etc). Whilst they can be perfectly healthy you need to be aware of possible problems that could happen and signs to look for!
Remember there are only two types of chihuahua longcoat and smooth coat! There are no definitions for size they are just Chihuahuas!!

Great post, Sarah. I wish we could eradicate that term. It really has done harm to the breed, it makes me so angry.

We've actually been attacked when trying to educate people over it.
Someone told me I need to "educate" myself because there is such a thing as a teacup hahaha

Oh, I know! Isn't that the worst?! I have told people and they look at me like I don't know what the heck I'm talking about. Or they will say something like no, they do exist, Paris Hilton has one. ARGH.

Ugh. I know, I really hate it too. The whole celebrity thing has been detrimental as well. It's brought the wrong kind of attention to the breed and attracted the wrong people. Now you have people wanting them because they think they are a cute, little dog I can dress up and carry around as a cute accessory, and then they often end up in shelters when the novelty wears off. It's truly so awful and breaks my heart.
