It's years since we had a hamster, last little one was a rescue and died years ago. But next weekend we are looking after a little oldie, hope she is okay, always a bit worrying when looking after other peoples pets! Especially older ones Anyone with a hamster here?

How does a hamster end up in rescue? Anyway it will be fun to look after one for a weekend This one belongs to someone I know, so not a rescue! Just needs a baby sitter for the weekend, as it's owner is away. Normally she goes with them to their mum's caravan, but they are worried about her travelling, especially if its as warm as it has been. Hamsters do end up in rescue, usually because kiddies lose interest, like many small animals. Years ago I did take one in that was actually found wandering in the street, we ended up keeping her. Nevr had a hammy of our own since, so will ne nice to have a little visitor. Sarah ~ I don't think the females smell as much as the males!

Don't they go into season a lot tho??? Like every couple of weeks?? Probably, like a lot of small animals? Syrian hamsters need to be kept alone as solitary animals, other than at mating time (can see their logic ) Our hamster was a female and I never noticed any change in her while in season and they are too small to be routinely spayed. Unsure if this constant series of seasons has any negative effect on them though? I know unspayed rabbits are at risk, just like bitches of pyometra.

I had a couple of hamsters a while back. My female syrian had to be pts at 18mths old as she had an anal prolapse The syrians were always the best temperament wise, very gentle and so so easy to handle. Were a buggar for bar chewing though!! The males definately STINK compared to the girls. But I think that rule just applies to males of any species tbh ha ha
