Tabithas little chicken leg looks so pittiful it upsets me. Being that it can be hereditary Therese, is jerry ok? It is very upsetting. I've cried more than once. I'm having a harder time getting through the recovery time than she is... Jerry has great knees; thank goodness! Tabitha had a grade 1 when I first got her at 7 months old. Her first few months with me were difficult and then the knees seemed to settle down or something. She slowed down a lot and gained a lot of weight. I thought she was just a mellow dog. She had to have dental surgery this past April (age 2 1/2). While she was on the Metacam, I noticed she was far more active. I asked the Vet to check her and she had progressed to Grade 3. The Metacam was helping her feel better. So, she got referred to the Ortho Vet because of her positive change while on the Metacam! As a side note... At the same time (April) I started her on a weight loss plan and she has dropped 20% of her bodyweight. That has helped tremedously with her recovery from the surgery and eased the strain on the other knee which is also Grade 3. If your dog suffers from LP and is overweight it's really detrimental to them.

Oh gosh that's just awful I didn't know she cMe to you with LP how awful for you thank goodness jerry Is ok!! It was never mentioned by the Breeder; and, her contract exempts LP and hernias... I remember I took Tabitha in to my Vet for her "well puppy" checkup and he said she was Grade 1 in her left knee. There was no recourse with the breeder and no way I would send Jerry's twin back after I had brought her home.

That's very bizarre, like she knew?? People have no morals whatsoever!! Makes me sick!! Very very lucky with jerry!! I just thought the second pic she looks like one of those Little lion dogs with the bald bums Kristi will be a fab breeder when she gets to that point

If you see skipping in the rear, you can pretty much bet you are looking at LP. I have heard people say (not just chi's but other toy breeds), "Oh, he's so happy he skips when he runs!" Every time I see a dog skip in the rear, my heart sinks. Oh i'm the same Tracy I work at a dog boarding kennels so we see alot of it One poor little guy a while ago was constantly hopping from leg to another he couldn't walk properly at all it was so sad

Therese I didn't realise tabitha had LP. Bless her little heart, how terrible for you both. Her beautiful coat aswel, oh my gosh.
Barbara what a heart breaking pic. My Billy will eventually have to have surgery on both his legs. His LP is still at stage 1 thankfully, but his legs are terribly bowed and his feet turn right in. It dosent stop him mind you, I'm sure he was a kangaroo in a previous life!

Oakley had an LP issue in her leg, she was naughty and jumping a baby gate and she literally crushed the entire knee joint and patella and has an artificial patella in place now! Her other knee doesn't luxate according to our vet, but I think that she puts extra strain on it, as when she runs on uneven surfaces she'll pick it up a bit. She is so light and small, that even if there were something wrong, I wouldn't put her through the surgery and recovery again, it is SO HARD on them, and she has her "bionic" knee now so 3 good legs is good enough ha ha The vet ortho who did her surgery said that she was 100% certain that she had no genetic predisposition to it so we just got unlucky. Its so important to keep chis from jumping up and on and off of things, as it can cause damage to even the strongest knees. Here is Oakley after her knee surgery... My naughty little dog figured out how to get her cone off... And she got at her stitches...thankfully they were okay! The recovery was definitely stressful and NO FUN.

This is so scary to me because Brody is the energizer bunny and he has no fear. He runs and jumps and LEAPS off of couches, beds, etc. He races up and down the stairs. He is sooooo active. I have tried the pet stairs and he just leaps off right next to them instead of using them. I should have never let him get on the bed/furniture as a baby. He is incorrigible and unstoppable!! I'm so afraid he's going to injure his knees/hips with all the running and jumping he does.
