Tracy, can I just get regular human fish oil capsules at a grocery store or something? I feel silly even asking that, but I really have no idea! LOL. Are there different kinds? Better or worse kinds? What do you get?

Hi Rachel - yeah, you can just use human fish oil capsules. Cheaper than the dog stuff and probably better quality control since it's for humans, not animals. You can get fish oil at walgreens, sams, walmart ... any place that carries vitamins will have fish oil. Just read the label and try to get one that's 'purified' to remove mercury and contaminants, etc. There are lots of reputable brands. Nature Made, etc.
Most of them will say 1000mg on the front of the bottle. That's 1000mg of EFA (essential fatty acids). Look at the DHA/EPA number. It should be around 100mg for a 5 pound dog, so take that into consideration. Although it's almost impossible to 'overdose' on fish oil, you might see loose stools if you over do it.
Brody gets one capsule of fish oil (plus a vitamin E 200iu) about 3 times a week.

I buy the 17 oz bottles of Iceland Pure Salmon oil, that comes in a METAL bottle. The plastic bottles have all the negative effects of plastic we all are wary of for human stuff. My crew goes through the 17 oz bottle in a bit less than 2 months, getting it 3-4 times a week. So we've not really had to worry about it spoiling...
They have even smaller bottles of the oil, I think 8 oz? So that might work well for those w/ fewer dogs. The key I think is to use whatever it is, rather quickly.
I've thought about giving regular old fish oil capsules for humans and may give that a try next. Laurel and Trigger benefit from the oil the most as they naturally have more coarse coats. The rest of mine are so soft I wouldn't even think it were possible to feel if it were making them any more soft lol. But I know it works to help their inside joints and whatnot that I can't see/feel.
FOr awhile I was giving it every day, and they did just fine...so, I'd guess a squirt once a day wouldn't hurt them at all?

Thanks Kristi! I'm going to get away from the plastic bottle after it's gone. the only thing that has stopped me from giving it more is that it makes Roo's anal glands act up when I give it often for some reason. :/

Never seen Salmon oil in capsules- are we talking about generic fish oil capsules or salmon oil?
I had heard that it is possible to over-dose vitamin D if using cod liver oil.
I use salmon oil from the bottle daily. If I run out, i use olive oil...

Can't tell you where - sorry - but I also read not to use cod liver oil. But that was when I was reading into kidney function or rather impaired kidney function. The one place said make sure the oil isn'[t from the liver as it places more strain on the kidney?
Don't think it would apply to healthy dogs though.
