My thoughts are that many people lose their chickens etc to foxes through bad animal husbandry 
I totally agree with you about hunting, it's simply VILE and it belongs to history's dustbin along with bear baiting and dog fighting.
I also agree that many urban foxes are encouraged into the towns, by people feeding them and the rubbish they leave lying around for foxes to eat
But as so often happens, many people (generalising) choose to demonise the poor fox
