Can anyone advise me on longhair coats, how often should a long hair chi shed his/her coat? Just looking for a few pointers from you more experienced people. I groom Kas quite regularly but he seems to be shedding a lot lately. More so than he has in a while and the boyf is moaning about it. I know diet would play a large part in coat quality, any tips?

Boys shed less then girls they tend to do it seasonally. So now is the time to shed really. It will be bad for a month then stop totally for the winter then start again I'm spring.
Diet does play a huge part. A good quality diet will help keep their coats in good shape

I assume if a female LC is spayed she'd shed less during their seasonal shed? But both my girls are intact so I am unsure. I do know they shed LESS as a rule but Mari has two times per year where she will "blow" her coat...it's usually 5mo after every heat for her but they're all different. Lulu is just getting in her adult coat & I suspect her heat any time (she's 8mo) so I'm not sure what pattern she'll follow. Maybe the no blow pattern? Haha (wishful thinking!!) But I agree with Sarah...chances are she'll shed for a month or so & stop for the winter. They really do tend to shed less than the SC's for sure. Especially if they're on a decent food as pointed out. Mine have been on soley ZiwiPeak for about a month and really their coats haven't been so shiney & soft in a looong time! And I've not been giving them supplements other than Lulu getting a calcium supplement & the rest an immunity booster (Eyemunity) as I'd noticed some yeast around their nails. Otherwise we've taken a break from the regular Nupro & where ZP has fish oil in it I've been laying off the added oils. I also have to say their breath is much fresher since not adding in Nupro. (Marley especially--his could knock you over flat! Bahahaha!! Even on prey model raw!!)

They don't always do as you think......mostly my bitches will lose their coat over their seasons and if they whelp about 9 weeks later. However Amelia hardly lost her coat at all this season and has got her best coat ever..............strange girl.

I have never had a long coat chi, but any long coat dog I have ever had has always shed less then my short coat dogs. It's the opposite of what you'd expect.
Roo doesn't shed at all, but Pip can shed quite a bit. Tips that help - high quality food, (no kibble/grains helped in my case) oils, daily brushing and regular baths. I know they say bathing too much can dry out their skin, but I personally find if I give Pip a bath every week or two during his high shed times, he sheds less. It must loosen and get rid of some of that excess. It definitely helps in his case.

I know lcs are meant to shed less than smooths- but Eva sheds profusely- and CONSTANTLY. You could brush her every week and get handfulls of hair off her. She still has quite a lot of coat though so she must just produce a lot of hair.
