I am having trouble with potty training Paco! He sneaks off to urinate in various spots all around the house, even though he's let out plenty to go. He sleeps with me and I find that he will sometimes jump off the bed in the night and has a favorite spot upstairs just outside the bathroom where he goes. It's driving me mad! Any suggestions? I tried a belly band but the small is too small and the medium is too big! UGH! HELP!

I wouldn't give him run of the house AT ALL. He has to earn that. You'll have to go back to basics.

Crate training is the only thing I would ever consider.

He's 2. He goes in a crate when we're not home. Should I crate him at night too? What about when we're home? He sneaks off to potty!

I'm sure you will get a lot of different answers and opinions on this matter. But I personally crate Kas overnight. I'd be worried about rolling onto him during the night if he was in my bed for one. Then first thing in the morning it's out of the crate and into the back yard for the toilet. It's his routine and he knows the drill! :-)

I'm going to start doing that. I love having him sleep with me BUT don't love the pee stains on our carpet. Luckily, they come out when we clean the carpet. We used to have a Bissel carpet cleaner/steamer but it didn't work very well. Now we rent the Rug Doctor and use their carpet cleaner solution. It makes the house smell fresh and removes any and all dirt and urine stains. So as far as potty training, I've never had this difficult of a time with my other dogs. Paco is just not picking it up!

He's not picking it up because he's been allowed to do it. I mean that nicely. I would start with house training 101. Dont' let him loose in the house unsupervised! That means he is with you, or he is in the crate. When you let him outside, make sure he pees. If he doesn't, back in the crate he goes. He's an adult so he can hold it. There's NO excuse for an adult male to pee in the house. You can use a leash and tie him to your belt loop so that he is with you and you can watch him. I would also suggest an enzyme cleaner. The carpet cleaner 'might' get out the stains we can see, but he can still smell it. You can get a black light and shine it around and see where he has gone. That all needs to be thoroughly cleaned. Natures Miracle is a good cleaner. You'll have to be patient and very very consistent. Certainly he should NOT be sleeping with you until he has solved his night time urination habit. An adult can and should be able to hold it all night. There's no excuse for getting off the bed and peeing in your house. It will take some diligence and a lot of patience, but you can re-train this. You have a good 15 years left with this dog. Invest the time and energy NOW to get over this problem.
