Hi is neutered. He was in his crate last night. He pooped and urinated in it. He went right out this morning. Maybe the crate is too big?

Wow wonder why he is going in the night..
With his crate block it off you only want to give him enough room to be able to stand up and turn around.. it may be that you have to get up to let him out to the toilet for a few nights so he realises thats where he sleeps.. i would have the crate around during the day feed him in it etc so he realises that is the place you do not toilet!! He shouldnt be going at night though

The crate is too big. If you want him to hold it all night (and he's old enough to do that), then put him in a crate just big enough for him to turn around in. If you don't mind if he goes to the bathroom at night, use a playpen sized crate, a large one, like great dane sized. Or get an ex-pen. Put his bed at one end and then pee pads or newspapers on the other end. Has he ever used pee pads before? The only problem with that is that he learns it's OK to go in the house. Can he make the distinction between going only on the pads? Some dogs don't and they start going on bathrugs, towels on the floor, clothes, etc.
If he were mine, I'd use a very small crate and train him to hold it.
What are you feeding and how often? If he's free fed, or fed a lower quality food, he will have to poop more.

I'm feeding Diamond Naturals. I don't want to use the potty pads. I'd rather he go outside. I'll have to get a smaller crate.
