We recently adopted a two year old chihuahua from a shelter. He is a really good dog. He appears to be house broken and hasn't chewed on anything that wasn't already his. He goes in the crate okay, but we have been letting him stay in the living room and kitchen during the day while we work so he can run around. I also have left out pads where he can do his business if he needs to, but he prefers to go outside.
I've been reading about the important of maintaining a predictable schedule to help reduce anxiety for pets. While I am able to come home during lunch on most days, my job doesn't allow me to do this every single day - things come up. I would say I can come home about 3-4 out of 5 days a week. Is it better to go home on the days that I can to let him out or would it be better to just stay away so he won't get anxious on the days when I cannot come home? I also am not able to control what time I can come home during lunch, it can vary by as much as two hours. I would like to do what is best to make sure our little dog is happy and stress free.
