For me, a leash is not needed. However, I get a lot of flack for not using a leash. I trained my puppy to come with treats. She always comes to me when I call or whistle.
What do you think?

Oooooh not good..... Years ago, when I was 14, my dog Lady, a whippet X, was hit by a car when she suddenly darted out across the road when she saw a lady who was a member of the training club. Because we went to dog club 3 times a week and Lady was very obedient I arrogantly believed I had full control of her and, I guess, 99% of the time I did. But dogs, being animals, will ALWAYS do something unexpected when you least expect it We were lucky as despite LOADS of blood Lady got off with a skinned hock and a couple of cuts which only needed a small amount of veterinary treatment but it could have ended SO different!!!! Broken bones or even Lady being killed Since then I ALWAYS keep my dogs leashed unless it's the beach or open countryside with no roads (or sheep!) around. In countryside with sheep present they still have their freedom but on an extending lead. TBH any GOOD dog owner will take pride in caring for their dog and their safety & welfare and do everything they can to promote how wonderful dogs are When I had Tina Whippet in 2008 she was brilliant at coming back to me as soon as I called ''Here'' or whistled (amazing how handy a pocket of cooked sausage, cheese & smoky ham pieces can be ) but I still wouldn't risk her offlead unless it was 200% safe Dogs will be dogs

Well, for me two of my dogs - a schnauzer and a chih boy are always on leads when we are somewhere near road, only my small princess goes free, but she is always very close to me. But as gillykat said - they are unpredictable and I can only agree that if there is any possible danger - cars, not so friendly people or other unknown dogs - it's better to take them on lead.

Dangerous... Your dog may be ok with recall but others aren't and anything can spook it and it'll be gone.. Mine are never off leash when out and about
