So yesterday evening, after worrying about Harry being a brat, he gave me something far worse to worry about. I put a prawn container (with a few bits of prawn in it) on the floor for Phoebe, as she likes to lick up the last of the juices as well. It had a little pad each side that they put in there to soak up excess liquid, but she just ignores the pads and gets the prawn bits, so I didn't bother removing them. A bit later my hubby made a joke about the container looking like it had been in the dishwasher, so I said "Oh, you threw the pads out did you?". He looks at me in such a way that I knew his response was going to be "No" and we both had a panicky look on our faces, when we realized that either Phoebe, or Harry had EATEN both the 5" x 1" absorbent pads attached to bits of plastic! We both felt pretty sure that it wasn't Phoebe, but neither of us could recall Harry having more than about 10 seconds being out of sight, but I rang the vet out of hours anyway. When I told him what had happened and that we're not absolutely sure, but pretty certain our little 3lb Chi had eaten these plastic pads, he just said without any hesitation, that we shouldn't worry, that 'it'll all get mangled up in his stomach and pass through over the next couple of days'.
I cannot tell you how terrified I felt for a while yesterday evening! I'm still watching Harry closely to see if he shows any signs of getting a stomach ache, or signs of not being able to go to the loo, even though the vet reckons he'll be fine. So far, everything is normal, but I can't help thinking about how tiny these little guys' insides must be.
And YES I have just learnt yet another lesson... no more will I lazily put a plastic container on the floor for any of the pets! But it honestly NEVER occurred to me that one of the pets would eat plastic coated absorbent padding!!!
It's things like that make me wonder if having just one Chihuahua is more than enough to handle... I'm not sure I could cope with the stress of another one...
