Okay Sarah - in reply to the other thread:
I bought some heart, liver and kidney today. The lady told me half a neck each? I think I will just weigh it and see how much to give that way. She said 2oz organs a week - split over a few meals - is that right?

Easy for me to remember that way. I have worked up to just doing organs as a couple meals on the weekend with a chicken wing tip and he processes it fine with no loose stools. The heart you can just feed as a meaty meal. It can be 'rich' for some dogs so feed accordingly and go slow. Sounds like you are off to a great start!

Tracy -- stupid question, but how can you just do the organs 1-2 times a week, does their body have the ability to "save" the nutrients to use as needed? I usually do a little w/ each meal most of the time or they hve a premade which has it in there too, but they just get a teeny bit.

I guess I look at it just as we eat and feed our human family members. I don't eat 5 veggies and fruits every day for example. I might skip a day or one day I might have double portions of veggies. Or one day I might not have enough protein, and too many carbs, but then switch it around on another day. It all evens out over time to a balanced diet. The kibble companies have us brainwashed to think that our dogs are required to eat a 100% balanced portion of kibble for each meal. While that's all well and good, it isn't necessary. They would like us to think that dog nutrition has to be really really complicated. In truth it doesn't. If you are feeding mostly meat, a little bone, and some organs thrown in (about 10% of the diet), then you are good to go. Just as with people, a balanced diet is balance over time. Not balance at each and every feeding.

Also look back at the wild ONLY the alpha wolf eats the organs because they are the good part. The lower the ranking in the pack the later they eat.
My mum went on safari to Kenya and said watching the lions eat was amazing... They have the same sort of hierarchy ish as wolves and wild dogs... But mum said after they had their fill they let the hyenas eat the rest v interesting

Well we had a blip and of course it was with Pixel.
I gave them beef a few days ago - never had it before. Pixel OMG got terrible blood filled diarrhea in the evening on her walk. She had beef the evening before and then turned her nose up at food all the next day. I just let her fast as she didn't want to eat. About 6 we went out for a walk and about a minute in she had diarrhea - blood filled diarrhea - all down her legs. It was very frightening.
We packed up and came straight home. I was no way taking her to the emergency vet - I HATE that vet. Plus her gums were pink and she wasn't dehydrated. I bathed her and before bed she perked right up. I fed her a tiny bit of chicken before bed and then the next day she was totally back to normal.
I have been reading and reading (again!!) and it could have been the blood from the beef that came out not digested. It wasn't red - was brown blood - old blood. She only had one instance of it and is all back to normal now she's back on chicken.
I have spoken to a friend of mine who has one of her lot can't eat beef - or lamb. So I'm afraid now to try the lamb I bought.
What do you think?
