Thanks - that's made me feel a bit better I'd hate to think I'd pushed her into something that will cause her pain - I thought I was trying to stop her pain.

You did the very best thing for her and any caring owner would do the same Thankfully J's leg was not so damaged through injury, but he could not put any weight on it and it was causing him discomfort when it slipped out, though it was out almost all of time I think You couldn't leave a dog like that for months! Anyway as I said he's a fit as a lop now and was 9 in April Hope Pixel does as well as him!

Ack -- did they really do surgery for LP on Pixel before she was 1? The surgery should never be done before a minimum of 14-16 months because their bones are still growing and more often than not cause the op to fail or great discomfort... Sorry but that's not true. If a dog has a severe patella luxation, is in pain or walking on three legs, they need surgery. Jago was about 9 months when his knee went, he was hopping around on three legs within weeks of us realising ther was a problem with the knee To put off surgery would be tantamount to cruelty ... in my opinion. Jago's operation at this age was 100% sucesssful and he has had no discomfort whatsoever, so people whose dogs need early surgery need not worry unduly ... they would just need to look at J to know how well it can work and I know he is not alone I would hate to see people delaying surgery with no good reason or to beat themselves up if there Chihuahua needed surgery before 1 year/14 months, whatever I spoke to multiple orthos about it and in genetic cases it does more harm than good to try to fix it before 14-16 months. Ivy is in no pain and gets around beautifully...better than a lot of dogs you see in the ring...she has grade 3 in both knees. Guess I am cruel though!

See Pixel didnt use her leg at all, it was turned in at a funny angle, pulled up in towards her body and she just hopped on 3 legs. My vet did say see how she goes initially, see if she learns to pot it in herself and will use it but sadly she never did, if she was getting use from her leg I may have waited.
Ivy doesn't sound like she's really having any problems with hers during day to day life.

Just thought I would update on Pixel. Shes doing well - I'm pleased. I didn't have my kids today and so I felt okay with giving her a bit more freedom round the house, she trotted about quite happily.
After 5 minutes on her walk she asked me to pick her up (anyone elses cho do that? Run in your way and then turn to look at you?) But then she fought me to go back down and she had another 5 minutes.
I am letting (making) her rest in her crate for a good hour after the walks and any time I can't supervise her and she's not limping. She looks to be going carefully on it - not much weight - but not limping.
I'm pleased so far.

So pleased to hear Pixel is doing so well, but not surprised Animals (and humans) have an amazing ability heal if given the right care and attention. Hoping she is as fit a Jago when she is all recovered! Great news. x
