Well Pixels 4 weeks is up - she's allowed to be free from tonight. But I don't know what to do next - my vet said 5 or 10 minute walks a day upping by 5 minutes every week to build up the muscle in her leg - if she limps for more than a couple of hours afterwards then reduce walking time back down for another week. I can do that. It's more in the house I am worried about - she and Rez will play, maybe even fight (she seems to have gone off him while she's been recovering  ). They are likely to be running about together and stuff,and that's how she hurt her knee in the first place. So peeps who have been through this - what do I do with her around the house movement and interactions with the other dogs, particularly boistrous rez? |

I havent been through this but 4 weeks seems extremely short
For LP Recovery.
With Rez being a puppy I would Be inclined to not let them Play together just yet. Or I Would ensure Rez is exhausted after a long walk Before they are put together.

yes seems short to me too. It was 4 weeks confinement really, only in a crate or on a lap. I just cant give her free access now I don't think and my vet is away for 2 weeks now, I don't trust the other vet at the practice either.
But humans with a broken limb are usually cast for 6 weeks minimum aren't they?

When Jago had been on cage rest for 4 weeks (I am as sure as I can be that it was only 4 weeks) we were given the option of x raying repaired knee, if vet happy he could then go straight onto unrestricted play ... basically back to normal routines. Or not x ray an then introduce exercise cautiously/slowly over a period of weeks. We opted for the x ray as Jago was such an active little guy and we simply knew given the chance he would want to run about and go walkies. Obviously, not all owners would make this choice, or all vets recommend it. Anyway, x ray proved leg 100% stable and Jago was let loose from pen to do what he wanted ... much to his relief ... and he had no issues following this  So in theory, with a good vet, it is possible for the patella repair to be sound enough for running and jumping. But obviously vet advice must be taken! (It's also worth remembering that no bones are broken in patella repairs, certainly our vet did not tinker with Jago's at all.) In your situation, I'd limit interaction with other dogs to outside walking or to one room, where hopefully they cannot rip around too much. Other times, sadly I think the crate would still be used Jago's muscles seemed fine after the cage rest and seemed to be working perfectly well following his release from the pen!!! oh, I am surprised about the 4 weeks. Tabitha was given 8 weeks of cage rest, on my lap with leash on, or carried out to go potty and carried back in. Then, she has xrays to determine the success of the surgery. After that, it's a slow return to activities. I can't imagine just turning her loose with Evie or Jerry. It's going to be a process of getting back to what she was before. I would trust your intuition and go slowly. Glad Pixel is doing so well |

Rez is VERY full on so unless I can supervise them closely i think its going to be crate I think once shes walking 40 minutes or so (and not limping) then unrestricted play be allowed - I am of course going to consult my vet as soon as he's back off annual leave. They DID break Pixels shin bone - it was split lengthways and she has a few pins too. Her legwas aparently very bad indeed and the vet wasn't sure he'd even get it into alignment - he did get it into alignment and was very pleased with himself that her result is very straight. I really don't want to mess with that. |

That sounds a bad injury, sorry I thought it was a congenital patella luxation.
