Do your dogs bark when someone comes to the door or at noises outside? Mine do. I live in an apartment, and my neighbors are constantly banging stuff around. They always slam the door and bang their cabinets, which occasionally causes Lion and Penny to bark.
I am moving in with 2 roommates in a few months (in another apartment) and I wanted some tips on how to control their barking. They don't bark nonstop... Only when someone knocks on the door or is especially loud. However, it is hard to get them to stop barking when someone is at the door (unless they come inside for a minute).
I have tried the "quiet" command, and it usually works if they bark at a noise, but not when someone arrives. Advice, anyone?

Oh, and I also give them treats when they are quiet. For example, if someone passes by outside or slams their door and they don't bark, I give them a treat. Is this a good thing to do?

We are temporarily in an apartment too so I know what you are talking about with doors shutting, etc. Brody can hear car doors slamming in the parking lot and sometimes that gets him to bark also. I just say SHUSH and he will stop. But when people come to the door, he goes crazy barking. The only way to get him to stop is to open the door and let him see the people. Once he greets them, he's fine and won't bark anymore. It's a frustrating problem. I don't really have any answers. But I do understand where you're coming from!!

Well at least I know it isn't only my dogs! Penny is the worst.. She barks sooo loud and won't stop barking at people for a few minutes even when they come in. She usually starts the barking, and Lion follows.

Brody does NOT understand that not everyone in the world thinks he is the greatest thing. Some people don't like dogs, but not in HIS world. HA. He has to see everyone that comes to the door. I know some of them must roll their eyes at us, but oh well.

Betty will bark a bit but tends to hush when we say to. Goo barks at noises, and god forbid someone knocks on the door! YAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAPYAP! It's like constant until they stop looking at him and pet Betty (then he gets jealous).
