Merle Chihuahuas Due to the increasing popularity of this color pattern, I feel that I need to express the fact that so many Merle chihuahuas are now cropping up on the internet and all over the world FFS Evertime i browse through sites more and more are showing up ! Many people interested in purchasing a Merle Chihuahua, may be unaware of the problems the potential health problems, they might have with their new pet... Hopefully, with more knowledge about this pattern, people will reconsider buying / breeding this color pattern and i think most breeders do ... so who the hell are breeding these sick dogs ! so far have thease countrys have taken action: Australia (banned registration of merles) New Zealand (banned registration of merles) Canada (Merle is now a DQ in the Chihuahua standard) Great Britain (Merle is now a DQ in the Chihuahua standard and merles are also banned) Germany (Merles can not be shown/bred) so what about the USA do they except merles ?...christie what there thoughts over there on this would be intresting to know ... i know you cannot stop this but i just dont get why ... is all just about the money ?? ppl think they can just make a fast buck ... sorry guys just had to get it off my chest ... as i just saw the most horrid pictures of some very sick ones for sale ...

i find it really sad about the merle situation.. The problem is not with the merle gene juser t the people breeding it. A single merle is okay but its when a double merle is bred (2 merle parents or merle carriers) can cause blindness and deafness. Similar to the lethal white gene i think? Gosh its been a long time since i read up properly on merles (i did it back when i first started researching into chis)
Merles have only recently shown up in chis so the only way it could have come about is by cross breeding wiht something else (its assume to be Daxies since merles tend to be bigger, longer in the muzzle, longer in the back etc than your traditional bred to standard chi).
Its a very touchy subject.. there are reasons why certain countries have banned the registration i think taking that out of the picture if done properly some can look very pretty.. but its not for me obviously but then i wouldn't breed a dog that wasn't bred to standard.

I so so agree with you Sarah. I used to have and show merle Shelties a breed where you should always breed a black and white or tricolour to a merle and although I do know of some who have bred merle to merle to produce the double merle which is just simply a no no. There are plenty of breeds out there where merles, dapples etc are very popular. Just look at any copy of 'Dog World' and you will almost always find a pic of a winning merle of some breed. Many people dont understand the colour genetics involved and I think a lot of the problem in Chis is the huge colour gene pool and the problem of producing 'hidden merles' mainly in pale colours which may show the merle markings at birth but then fade so they cant be seen as the pup matures. If breeders are not honest about the birth colour then sell them on then these pups as adults could be bred back to another merle thus producing the double merle. I have bred roan guinea pigs in which the same breeding rules apply in which you never double up or you can produce the lethal whites.

yeah guys i agree with you all, i think milly molly is spot with hidden MERLES , that fade when pups get older to , perhaps the gene pool in chihuahuas is alot smaller and like you guys said Merles must of come through from a daxi or similar ... and i guess allot of people with Merles are not health testing them either so when they are crossed with a non Merle coated dog it can then through on more health issues and make the pups more venerable to problems ... yeah im not saying all merles are unhealthy as the genetics can work so well especially in some some breeds we mentioned ... just makes me feel sad, just some of the pictures iv seen are just horrid the pups look sick to me .... i guess iv got the january blues ! ... x
