i dont think you were in trouble for posting the results as such, just the way it was done (i.e posting full details before the breeder had the chance to tell other people who had bough pups from her from a similar pedigree) and posting the breeders name and address.
Louise is on holiday, but since shes a good friend of your dogs breeder she knows his pedigree. I am honestly starting to change my mind on this.. it seems that it seems to pop up randomly with no symptoms... the only dog DIAGNOSED with symptoms was Derrus Flashmoon at Ballybroke years ago... who since then now has no symptoms...it seems very bizarre we dont seem to be symptomatically affected like other breeds.. Meaning that i think this is far more complex than anyone first thought.. think we nee dto keep calm and listen to the experst in the breed.. we dont seem to be affecte dlike cavs are.. thank god

Mason was 3 years 10 months at the time of his scan. The current advice is that he can be bred with a bitch over 5 who is SM clear. I do not plan to use him as a stud at this stage, but cannot make any informed decision until other breeders have theirs scanned. I was planning to have him neutered, but what is the point when only about 25 dogs have been scanned? There might be thousands of others out there with a worse syrinx than him. I definitely will not be using him at stud. The line breeder was really angry, but all I did was tell the truth. Was accused of slander, but slander is only when you are telling lies. Making lots of enemies out there.

This is a very tricky subject and like most of us iv been following it all. I get both sides but i think its best not to panic! it takes time for things to change and if 25 dogs have had scan thats better than nothing at all. But i also agree that i think chihuahuas are not so much effected like cavs but we could be on the brink ..... who knows. Jean i dont think you have done wrong as such either its just a delicate matter and i think like most we can see both sides.

Hi i am new to this site. I only found you as i was researching syringomyelia. My beautiful little 1 and a half year old chihuahua was diagnosed yesterday with this awful disease. She was bred in Britain so you chihuahua owners beware. Its over here. I havent got a pedigree for her so dont know what line she is carrying. Shes a full bred chi though weighing 4 pounds. She also has GME, the mri scan she had yesterday was for this, but thats when they found the syringomyelia as well. Im devestated. Her breeder is in Biggin Hill and advertises her pups on the Pats Petals site. I will be informing her of this. Just wanted you all to know its over here in our chihuahuas. I didnt get a pedigree as she didnt want to register any of the pups to save money i guess. But im an ex vet nurse and now run and own my own dog grooming salon, and a previous owner of a kc reg chihuahua. So i know my chi's and she is an excellent example. I can also say to one of you who states you can easily tell this disease in affected dogs, Wrong. My baby showed no signs of this disease at all, and her syringomyelia is classified as severe. Im heartbroken. I love this little dog more than anything in the world she is with me 24 hours a day, she comes to work with me and has the sweetest temprement. She loves children, dogs and adults. So beautiful in nature and she has been struck down with 2 terrible diseases. Read up on GME, it can affect any dog at any age. I just wanted you all to know that our chi's here are now victims of syringomyelia.

Welcome to the forum. Who is her breeder? I am very very local to Biggin Hill.
She is young to have SM and be diagnosed grade 2 or above. I am so sorry you are going through this. Unfortunately without a pedigree/kc registration you cannot be sure as to wether a Dog is infact 'pure bred chi' there's no way about it unfortunately.. I have one no papers she looks full chi but obviously there's no Proof. sM is in all toy breeds, all countries but I think there is a lot more to it than we know.

Hi i would rather not name the breeder at this point until i give her a chance to do something about it. I spoke with her yesterday and she claims never to have heard of syringomyelia. This disheartened me somewhat as surely anyone breeding chi's should be on top of all health issues in the breed and have some knowledge of whats affecting them. There were 2 other pups in this litter both boys, i had the only bitch. Ive advised her to contact the owners and warn them. She did say she would also contact owner of stud dog and alert them also. I can only hope she is taking this seriously and will act accordingly so other people do not have to suffer this awful fate. I will give her a chance to try and rectify this problem but if she does nothing and continues to breed her dogs then i will gladly name and shame her. But im thinking this problem is very widespread more so than anyone thinks. I understand what you are saying about not knowing if my chihuahua is pure bred chi because no paperwork. But she certainly looks purebred and a good example. But yes this disease affects all toy breeds whether pure bred or cross bred. She is just so unfortunate to have GME as well, which seems fatal in all cases. I wonder if they are somehow connected even though my vet said they are 2 totally different diseases. But no one knows what causes GME so how can they rule this out totally. To have both at such a young age doesnt seem right unless one triggered the other.

Honestly I think it's either bad luck or very poor breeding unfortunately. I don't know if any ethical breeders locally (other than myself!!) and have seen a few ads for pups in biggin hill.
What I will say though is don't jump the gun with your breeder. Cases of SM have popped up where 4 generations of parents have been clear. Pet breeders will not be aware of the condition, it's relatively new and I am not quite sure what we are dealing with as it seems most the chis scanned positive have no symptoms at all I think one did and is now off medication and has no symptoms so I personally am not quite sure what we are looking at.
Was your dog diagnosed as having Chiari Likr Malformation and does it have a molera??

Hi no my dog doesnt have a molera and no she wasnt diagnosed with cm either. She was diagnosed with GME, mild hydrocephalus and severe syringomyelia. She was perfectly happy and healthy up to 2 weeks ago showing no signs of anything. It started with her crying out a few times as if some sharp pain had hit her and i took her straight to the vet who couldnt find anything wrong with her so came to conclusion she may have some inflammation somewhere and put her on metacam for a week. This was 2 weeks ago. She was perfect that week and stopped metacam after 7 days as prescribed. 3 days later she wasnt picking her left front leg up properly as she walked. You could hear it scraping on floor. So took her back again. Told to continue with metacam. Next day she was leaning to the left, following day her tongue was hanging out to the left, she couldnt eat properly, the next day her back left leg was also weak so following day MRI scan and neck xrays. Thats how quick all this happened. Dont know which disease caused these symptoms but guessing GME. I would like to start a new thread on GME to see if anyone can help me. I feel desperate to do all i can and would value any help anyone can give me. I dont know how to start a new thread but feel if everyone can help me find info on this disease i can try to do something positive. Ive managed to find a vet in Boston usa named allen sisson who claims to have a good success rate with GME with a 3 drug combination. Im off to vets tomorrow to see if he can converse with this guy and get relevant treatment advice. I just feel overwhelmed at the moment as 90 per cent of all i read is bad prognosis. I would appreciate any help.
