If we aren't in the same mess as the ckcs and a DNA test is available we could easily breed it out any dog with the disease is not bred from, carriers are only bred to non carriers, carriers from those matings are not bred from and Only non carriers bred from then onwards.
Rosie I would hope so too. All tests should be available regardless of whether there's a test for that specific breed.

I understand that but my point is, as of right now, there is no DNA test so there is a higher chance of breeding two carriers and creating more dogs with SM.
If they find out who has produced a chi with SM, then obviously they have to make sure to breed with another who does not have it, but seeing as the MRI testing really is only 100% accurate at 2 & 1/2 years (meaning it might not show up in dogs younger than this age on a scan), you could breed dog that's "nice" but known to produce SM offspring with a bitch who in her second season (still young) is a carrier, not knowing that she is.
I know you can't single out all of the dogs, but I just meant for now, more care should be taken and those dogs shouldn't be used.

And I would HOPE that the problem isn't already widespread enough that THAT many dogs are already with SM or carriers

I think you will be shocked at how many dogs have it. A lot is coming out right now! And they are having problems in Europe too. Once we have has a lot of the dogs scanned then we will be able to come up with a plan of action. I just don't think anyone should spay or neuter just yet.

No of course not, I'm not saying at to just and do it to all of them before finding out the extent of what's going on. Of course the dogs who actually have it SHOULD be done, that's just my opinion. But then I don't think people should start planning litters with lines who are known to have it just yet, either.

I am not panicking but my issue is that it's all well and good everyone scanning but it's obvious not everyone will be truthful about the results people are too busy throwing accusations

I think we need to assume it's reasonably widespread - such a large percentage of Graham's dogs tested positive for it! It's just finding out what other lines it's known to be in. I wish the 'Mystery Three' would just come forwards and confirm who they are so we can get more of a picture of what is already known.
