So Miley is obviously blue...and about a month ago she got this bald spot on her back. I think it is growing back, there are sparse little hairs there that I dont think were there before, but maybe they were. Its also a funny color. I wasnt worried about it at the time, but I sort of expected it to have grown back in by now. It doesnt bother her at all, and theres no sore or open wound at all, but its kind of a funny color. I just did a bit of a google on color dilution alopecia, and I think it looks like the seasonal variety, starting early spring and going along the back. Any thoughts? Sorry these pics kind of suck, my camera is awful in low light and as you can see the flash glares off her coat when I get to close. I can try getting better ones outside in the sun tomorrow, but there really isnt much to see that you cant see here, just an almost totally bald spot thats an off color. Does it look like alopecia to you? Or like something else? Thanks guys

Is her coat extremely thin anyway she always looked a little like Roos coat to me??
Is it a hot spot? It looks kinda red?

Yes it is super thin! I think her coat is very similar to Roos, would that maybe explain why its taking so long to re grow the fur? Shes bald on her neck and under her arms, with a thin coat everywhere else. Her tan points are thicker than her blue fur. I dont think its a hot spot, it isnt itchy and theres no "wound"- when our dachshund growing up got hot spots they were little open sores and kind of oozy I think? Its more purple than red, but that could be because of her blue skin. It looked like this picture to me, which is why I wondered if it might by seasonal alopecia. Obviously this one is worse though... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Seasonal_alopecia.JPG

Hmm maybe if she's bald underneath anyway I wouldn't say it was seasonal I'd say CDA unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it it could be that it's getting worse or because of the seasonal change she will shed some people had success the missing link Were both her parents blue/dilute?

We may need to try Missing Link for her to see if it helps. I think its probably some kind of alopecia, the fur that is coming in in that spot is kind of stubbly and broken looking which sounds typical of focal and seasonal, I was just leaning toward seasonal because of the timing and the position on her "flank". Lol I dont mind if shes bald, but Id like her to either be bald or have that spot grow in, she just looks mangy at the moment! Only her sire was a blue, but she came from a total byb so I think its safe to assume that breedings werent chosen carefully and there could easily have been dilutes in both lines Thanks for your help Sarah!

It's hard for me to tell by the pics, Katy. I see a red spot (that's not that spot you mean, is it?) and also an area across her back/spine that looks like its missing hair. Am I seeing it right? It does look like alopecia to me. Roo has the same thing. They do have very similar thin coats, but Miley has more hair than Roo. Roo is missing some hair over her spine area. Roo's coat became progressively worse starting when she turned 3. She is now losing more patches of hair on her head. They start off looking like spots and then slowly the hair starts coming off them. Her head is really bad now. She actually has area that are outright bald/bald, no peach fuzz over them or anything.

I drew on your pic just to make sure we're on the same page. Is this the area you mean? Or am I seeing it wrong. It looks like she is missing hair there..is that right? If that's the area you mean along her spine, that's exactly what Roo has which is alopecia. She's had it along that same area for awhile now and it's become progressively worse. I keep hoping it will grow back, but so far it's become worse, not better.
