It doesn't seem to be common practice in the UK to health test chi's at all, certainly when i've mentioned it to people they look at me like im talking another language! Logan was health tested in America before we bought him and has had his knees, heart and eyes tested. You can never do too much health testing IMO, I own two other breeds with no "recommended" KC health tests - pugs and basenjis. The main genetic problem in pugs is hemivertebra which can leave the dog paralysed. My first pug is affected very severly and may well end up paralysed, I hadnt heard of it when I was looking for her as all the breeders denied it was in their lines and not a problem in the UK.... I now know of quite a few who have it. Basenji's can get Fanconi but thankfully most UK breeders are very aware of this and open about the problems in the breed/their lines. Hopefully with careful breeding this should be a thing of the past in just a few generations. With my basenji I have had her tested for fanconi, hip scored and she will be eye tested before breeding as these are also problems that can crop up very occassionally in the breed. It can never hurt to test

Jess with the eye testing do you do the Bva/KC/icds or whatever it's called? I was reading up in it and the only breeds that the KC include on their breed records are on their lists and chis aren't on them so where would the result go? Limbo?

Yes, the BVA test. Any breed (or crossbreed) can be tested under the BVA scheme. I believe the tests just go into the BRS as normal for that group The lists just show the current status of the tests for individual breeds. For example, basenjis are on the "B List" for PPM (currently under investigation) but I will also have the annual eye test done to pick up cataracts and stuff which isnt on either list but would still be reported in the BRS

And do u get the certificate?
The only problem I have with patella testing is that I don't want her being put under and they put them under for it that bothers me!!
