LOL I love the gist of this thread......Your chihuahuas are far superioior to the poodles you are looking after.
I agree. I like the look of some big dogs like weimeranas, but I am fine just looking for other peoples, I dont have the time to excercise entertain any kind of working breed, I don't think many people do, thats why there are so many dogs with problems that are destructive.
At least there may be one perk of you having to look after Aslan and Zander, if you have convinced Miles out of getting a big breed. My bf has his heart set on another Labrador! All I have to do now is convince him that it's a chihuahua he wants instead.

I do like big dogs. We've only ever had big dogs on their own though. A greyhound and then a boxer. Both didn't occupy themselves lol but then we were all young (my 3 siblings and I) so we liked entertaining them!
I personally wouldn't have a big dog with a Chi. I think about a staffie size dog would be the largest I'd go, and even then I don't really have any desire for one lol. I think if you do have them from puppies, they will grow up and some dogs know to be gentle (my ex has a rottie and a yorkie and he is ridiculously gentle with her), however, there can always be accidents and I personally don't like the idea of having separate sections of the house for each size dog lol.

Thats the thing, hubby doesn't want a big dog bc he wants a big dog, and all that goes w/ it, he says its an ego thing lo which is totally the worst reason to get a dog. We had a Husky x German shepherd growing up and if you want to talk about a high-energy, problem dog, he was it lol. Then I have always been the one to get jumped up on and knocked over by labs so I really hate them...I just have yet to have a GOOD experience with big dogs.
I don't want separate sections of the house, either, and bottom line is I don't trust a big breed w/ my little dogs because accidents can/do happen.

Eep sounds like you guys have your hands full. I'd have had a heart attack too if the big dog went after Leah, so scary. I love big dogs, (had them growing up) but I personally wouldn't have one with a chi. I know people do it all the time and it often works out wonderfully but... I'd be too nervous. If you have the big dog first and really know their temperament/personality I suppose it would be easier to judge though.

If I was going to get a big dog, I'd get a giant dog. Probably a Great Pyrenees. We had one for 12 years when first married and she was a wonderful dog. So gentle and laid back. Extremely calm and great with our girls when they were little. They learned to walk holding onto her fur and toddling around. She was so patient and KIND. A true gentle giant. I personally don't care for labs or goldens. Most of them are so poorly bred that they are useless in the field (what they were bred for) and are just hyperactive and unpredictable. Hip problems are so prevalent. I vote for a giant breed if you go that route or else stay with the little guys. After having Brody, I can't even imagine having another breed.

After having Brody, I can't even imagine having another breed. Same here. It's chi's from here on out for me. I'm totally hooked on the breed.

Sandy my Collie is not a huge dog...but she is always wanting attention...she doesn't like to play with toys...but she likes for me to chase her, then she likes to chase after me...but she is bad to nip around my ankles...I guess the hearding insticnt, lol. She is old...so she is laid back, & doesn't act up to bad....in her younger years, she was a handful, & always into trouble.
Oh...& the little dogs...the boys aren't bad at all...but the girls are the worse...constantly picking on one another...getting into things, & causing trouble, lol..
