1 of the chi pups I sold lives with a rottie, st bernard and a staffy lol the other 1 lives with 2 labs and a mastiff cross, they have all been fine the chis just learn to move out the way quick. When we had our rescue staffy here she was so hyperactive and clumsy but if she was near the chis she switched and went so calm and gentle with them which says alot as she tried to kill my mums dog every time she got near. I'd love to get a ridgeback and a rottie but i'm way too lazy to give them the exercise they would need and I think my next dog will be a boston terrier

my hubby has 2 akitas. kaiser is HUGE. but he hates everyone except a reserved few. xeina the female is the most loving kind dog i have ever had the privilage of owning. but these 2 love each other, they will play for hours in the back, iv only see them fight once, and hubby just sorted that out. by law here they have to be muzzeled if going out, so hes always in control. i think the dogs you are caring for are just spoiled from what you are saying. so if you get a big dog it would be your dog, if you know what i mean
