I think the safest thing is probably one of those plastic pet taxis in the back seat. The ones with the spot for the seat belt strap to go through it. Mine go absolutely nutso crying in it though so I don't use it and use the bucket seat. I think they'd get hurt slamming into those grates...I just make sure they are bucked in snugly enough in their carseat they can't slam into anything. Oh do you? I don't use onw myself, but I have always read that was the safest way in the event of an actual crash. I have heard that during a big crash the buckles can snap or even the straps rip and then they would really go flying. I don't drive very much or far with mine and I'm always super careful so don't worry too much. One thing though, it's important to make sure that all buckle parts are metal and not plastic. I know some of the bucket seats come with a plastic one in the back which is obviously bad as they would crack easily under impact. I almost bought a bucket seat like that until I realized it was plastic. Pretty stupid why they would use plastic.

The crate just got crushed the seatbelt and the door came out along with the dog. The reason why I haven't bought any boosters doggy seats is that either the booster seat doesn't seem like it attaches securely enough to the vehicle seat, or the strap that attaches to the dog's harness doesn't seem secure enough. Ugh.

Ugh. I tie leashes to the metal portion of the head rests, then clip that to their harness. The booster is just so they can look out the window

thats odd the way they have put that crate in the car tho - mine i put side ways on so like you would have it behind the seat, and so the whole crate is held in by the seatbelt not just the top and not front facing like they have in that test

I did think about using a dog crate but I didn't really like the idea. I also thought about getting a custom made dog guard for the boot of my car but I dont like the idea of someone crashing up my bum and squishing my doggy

Ugh. I just read the crash test and it says pets in carriers in the back seat is safest which is what I was referring to so I'm confused. Maybe they are pointing out that it needs to be in the seat a certain way because of the pics they use the crate is clearly positioned and belted wrong as Chloe pointed out. If you put it sideways in the back seat I think it would be safe. I honestly think it's safer than the bucket seat. I mean honestly, in the event of a bad crash, I don't think anything is really going to help a small chihuahua, but using something is better than nothing. I use the seat belt and harness in case of small bumps and maybe a minor crash so they don't go flying. I don't think they would stand all that much of a chance though in a serious crash nomatter how they were in the car.

One of the biggest reasons I restrain my dogs in the car is what if I got in an accident and was out cold ? Oakley would hide under the seat and never be found. What if the car was on fire? Etc. So, I feel like it makes them easier for help to find, if it comes to that. I do agree--in a bad crash, a chi is probably SOL
