In the crash test it pretty much says the safest place for the dog is in a crate in the wheel well area or whatever, behind one of the front seats on the floor. Or for bigger dogs, in a crate in the far back of an SUV with one of those metal dividers. But even how my girls are now, on the floor in a crate, in a crash, if it's bad enough, the front seats will move out of position, then that can crush the crate. Like Kristi said, in a bad crash, a chi is pretty much SOL.. And when they belted in the crate, they did it through the belt guides on the crate, so it's technically the "right" way. But, even if the crate is sideways, it would prolly be crushed by the seatbelt the same way.

Aw Oakley. That's a good point. If I didn't restrain mine they would constantly by trying to get in my lap. They get really clingy in the car and want to sit with me. I tried it once early on when making a very short trip to work (only a couple minutes from me) and it was a mess, they kept distracting me. I also tried the carrier in the back seat and Roo cried so loudly like someone was killing her. It was awful. So the bucket seat seems to work best for me.

2 of mine love going in the car, jakes not that bad but sometimes he will sit and shake, he used to jump up on my mums parcel shelf too and one day he went to do it in my car and all i heard is this loud bang in the boot....i dont have a parcel shelf. Heidi is a big fan of the car she prefers going in the car than going for walks she stands up looking out the window. If someone has their car door open she will go and jump in it even if she doesn't know them
